Is Upgrading Your Security Alarm System a Good Investment?

Posted on

Security remains a top concern for many homeowners. From keeping your loved ones protected from undue harm to safeguarding your valuables from theft, having a security alarm system is one of the leading ways that individuals will secure their residence, as this system will alert them to the potential of any suspicious activity on their property. However, like most electronic systems, security system technology has evolved at a rapid pace over the years.

What was once considered innovative in years past is likely obsolete in the current age, as these systems have become smarter and more cutting edge. But is it necessary to replace your old security system if it is still in functional condition? To help you determine what will be best for your needs, read on to determine whether upgrading your security alarm system will be worth the investment.

Does your security alarm system receive updates?

Software and firmware updates are integral for the smooth running of a multitude of electronic devices. From computers to smartphones, regular updates from the manufacturer not only ensure that the device is up to date with the latest programmes but these updates also contribute to the overall efficiency and functionality of the device. However, these updates are not sent to the device in perpetuity.

With each passing year, newer models are manufactured and sold, and this steadily renders the older versions outdated. Hence, these older variants stop receiving any updates. If you notice that it has been over a year or more since your security alarm system received a software update, you should start considering updating it. Systems that are not up to date with the latest security updates are easy to bypass, which leaves your home vulnerable to a breach.

Does your security alarm system depend on wiring?

Extensive wiring may have been part and parcel of a multitude of electronic systems, from home theatre systems to phone systems and your security alarm system, but this is no longer the case. Over the years, more and more devices have transitioned to operating wirelessly, at least even partially. Smartphone manufacturers, for example, are steadily phasing out the headphone jack so more users are utilising wireless headphones and earphones. The same goes for security alarm systems.

Rather than have to set up endless lengths of wiring around a property so that cameras, sensors and so on are installed, modern-day systems are entirely wireless! And this is not merely for aesthetic value. Unlike wired systems, the wireless variety is invulnerable to outages due to wires being cut by intruders. Secondly, wireless systems are not vulnerable to damage stemming from wires being gnawed by pests, exposed to moisture and so on.
